Third-generation potter of Shoraku Kiln, a Kyoto kiln dedicated to the tradition of Raku ware.

For generations, the kiln has continued the practice of hand-shaping each bowl individually, embracing the subtle variations that emerge through fire, clay, and human touch.

CARE

(Please pay special attention to the following when using Raku tea bowls.)Before use, soak the tea bowl in water or lukewarm water.For a new bowl, soaking for one to two minutes is recommended. For a bowl that has already been used regularly, about thirty seconds is sufficient. This helps keep the bowl clean, prevents stains from setting in, and also helps protect it from cracking.After use, wipe away any moisture and allow the bowl to dry thoroughly before storing it. Depending on the season and humidity, we recommend leaving it out to dry for about a week rather than immediately placing it back in its box. Storing the bowl while it still contains moisture may damage the piece and can also cause musty odors to develop.If an odor does develop, preparing tea in the bowl daily will usually resolve the issue naturally. In most cases, the smell will gradually disappear after about a week of regular use. If the odor persists, please consult the shop where the piece was purchased.Raku tea bowls are soft ceramics made from coarse clay. Because of this, moisture may occasionally seep through the surface. In addition, Raku ware is sensitive to acidity, so please avoid serving or leaving acidic foods such as pickled plums or vinegar-based dishes in the bowl.Raku ware was created primarily for use in the tea ceremony.Please avoid using it as everyday tableware.

Unlike most ceramics, Raku bowls are shaped entirely by hand rather than on a potter’s wheel. This process creates a softness and individuality that cannot be replicated mechanically.

Removed from the kiln while still glowing with heat, each bowl carries the marks of fire, air, and chance. No two pieces are ever exactly alike.
